Join the Treevolution to help offset your travel carbon footprint!

With the world population becoming more aware of how our activities affect the planet, there is a lot of talk about offsetting our carbon footprints. But, what exactly is a “carbon footprint”? In short, it is the amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities. These activities include travel. Travel footprints are often dominated by car use but just one long flight could cause air travel to be the largest part of your footprint.

Climate change is an urgent issue that affects us all and will impact on the quality of life of our grandchildren and the environment they will live in. Also, it will affect our beloved natural environments, wildlife and communities where our projects carry out their vital work.

Reducing your footprint is the first step to a lower carbon future. Small actions like turning off the lights when you don’t need them contribute to lowering your footprint.

But how about the portion of your footprint you can’t reduce? Fortunately there is a way. A variety of carbon offsetting schemes enable us to play a part in the climate change battle. Planting trees is an excellent and long-term way to offset your carbon footprint generated by international travel.

As our tree-planting charity partner in South Africa, Greenpop, point out, trees play a key role in our battle against climate change, feed our rivers, help to regulate the impact of storms and floods, harbour biologically-diverse ecosystems, and provide shelter, jobs and security for forest-dependent populations. Within our cities, urban forests purify the air and ground water, regulate temperatures, provide shade, and encourage pride of place.

To give you an idea of the carbon footprint generated by our volunteers’ air travel, we have calculated that each volunteer would need to plant at least 6 trees to offset the carbon footprint generated from one trip. (This based on a return international flight between London and Johannesburg, South Africa, plus an average 1.5 – 2 hour onward return flight which equals 6.7 trees).

Worldwide Experience pledges to plant a tree for every volunteer that travels with us every year. Our volunteers can also pledge to plant trees, or you are able to make a donation* to our tree-planting charity partner, GreenPop, and join the #Treevolution!

*As a guideline, it costs approximately £7 (ZAR120) to plant a tree in South Africa
