Students from the Institute for Environmental Studies (IES) at Texas Christian University (TCU) have enjoyed the opportunity to become involved on a first hand basis in rhino conservation in South Africa. The TCU Rhino Initiative was started by the IES’s director, Dr Mike Slattery in 2014 in partnership with our world renowned wildlife vet and conservationist, Dr William Fowlds.
Dr Fowlds and his vet team lead our Vets Go Wild courses curated specifically for veterinary students, and for four years have welcomed TCU students every year as part of their Biodiversity and Human Development study abroad course. TCU has been sending students to South Africa every year since 2015 to participate in Dr Fowlds’ wildlife conservation course, establishing an ongoing association with him and his critical rhino conservation work.
As part of TCU’s annual study tour, Worldwide Experience tailors an itinerary which kicks off with three days in Johannesburg to visit Soweto, the Apartheid Museum and the Cradle of Humankind, followed by three days in Cape Town to experience the Cape Peninsula with the infamous Table Mountain, plus Cape Point and the endangered African Penguins at Boulders Beach. The tour ends off with ten days of hands-on conservation work in the field alongside Dr Fowlds and his team at Amakhala Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape.
In 2019, 13 dedicated students signed up for this life-changing experience!
